Sino-Vietnamese border war in 1979 and post-war geopolitical adjustments of Vietnam

Le V.T.

Abstract

There have been many explanation for the China -Vietnam war in 1979. The approaches are various and multi-faceted concerning the reasons, process and consequences of the war. However, the corollaries in ideational and ideological changes in Vietnamese and in general thinking have not yet been noticed. This research aims to fill that gap. Corollary 1 in general geopolitical context is the formation of a short-term US - China - ASEAN - NATO - Japan aliance to deal with the Soviet-Vietnamese and the socialist bloc in general, until the Soviet Union disintegrated in 1991, causing heavy damage to Vietnam. Corollary 2 is that the Vietnam - China 1979 war brought extremely harsh post-war time for Vietnam due to the delay of normalization in US - Vietnam and other countries relations such as with Japan, Europe, ASEAN. Corollary 3 is that the war transformed the perception by Vietnamese leaders and people of the enemy category, independence, sovereignty and socialism ideals. Last but not least, there are solutions from new insights and perceptions in Vietnam policy makers.

Urbanization and land disputes in Vietnam: compromises and protests

Duchere Y.

Abstract

Urbanization is the modus operandi of Vietnam's integration into globalization and the “urban civilization” project is part of the expression of a new authoritarian norm. The first part of the article discusses how the Vietnamese Party-State justifies its urbanization project. The second part returns to the modalities of strengthening the control of the political-administrative apparatus over the urban manufacturing process by the way of compromise and arrangements between actors. The last part focuses on the authoritarian nature of urbanization and addresses the increasingly sensitive protests of subordinates to the state domination. The author concludes that those left behind in development policy and urbanization, through their everyday demonstrations, point to the failure of the authorities to build consent in the field of urbanization.

The digitalization of business: Vietnam’s perspective

Kanaev E.A., Nguyen Q.T., Vi T.H.

Abstract

As the digitalization becomes the key factor to raise the competitiveness of companies, as well as of the investment attractiveness of recipient countries, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV) may find it difficult to benefit from this process. The research question is why Vietnam, in spite of successful efforts to increase its investment attractiveness, may miss opportunities presented by the emerging digital business environment. The academic novelty of the paper account for the reveal of the repercussions generated by the global trend towards the digitalization of businesses for Vietnam. The approach to the research question is based upon general academic methods like observation, study of documents and comparison. The primary sources of the paper, a significant part of which is published in the Vietnamese language, include the statistics of Ministry of Finance of Vietnam, Ministry of planning and investment of Vietnam, interviews with the SRV’s government officials, as well as the UNCTAD and the World Bank reports. The principal findings of the study reveal that while Vietnam has succeeded in strengthening its attractiveness as an investment destination, the country still possesses insufficient resources to respond to the forthcoming global digitalization of businesses and incentivize companies to continue investing in the SRV. In this connection, a set of recommendations on how to rectify maters is presented by the authors.

Transgender persons in contemporary Vietnam: marginalisation and livelihood challenges

Pham Q.P.

Abstract

On 24 November 2015, the National Assembly passed the amended Civil Code, which officially legalises sex reassignment surgery (SRS) in Vietnam and introduces the right to legal gender recognition for transgender people who have undergone such surgery (Article 37). It is an important breakthrough, marking the efforts by the movement of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people for equality. However, transgender persons have still been facing challenges. While both the groups of trans women (or transgender women, or MTF: Male to Female) and trans men (or transgender men, or FTM: Female to Male) encounter social prejudices, the former are more vulnerable, isolated and marginalised in a patriarchal and male-dominated society. This article analyses a number of challenges and barriers faced by transgender persons in general, and the MTF in particular, regarding their livelihoods, and argues that social prejudices have driven transgender persons to the point of desperation in their search for livelihood and made them prone to poverty.

Development of family legislation in Vietnam (late XIX century-1976)

Syunnerberg M.A.

Abstract

The article analyzes the development of Vietnamese legislation in the aspect of family and marriage relations since the late XIX century, when Vietnam became an integral part of the French Indochina (Indochinese Union), until the country's unification in 1976. The study is based on the laws and regulations, including very rare materials, that are little studied even in Vietnam, and they are first introduced into scientific circulation in Russian Vietnamese studies. This study also demonstrates the evolution of state regulation of family life during the given period - age and conditions of marriage, family composition and the nature of relationships within it, the ability to file for divorce, etc. It is also shown how timely and to what extent the state responded to family life issues relevant to Vietnamese social thought, and, vice versa, how society itself perceived codification changes in such a traditional sphere.

Impacts of market economy and global digital communication network on Vietnamese literature of Renovation period

Le T.D.

Abstract

During Vietnam’s middle ages, its Confucians composed works of prose and poetry primarily for entertainment, interaction or education of ethics, so they never considered the works to be commodities. It was early in the 20th century, when a new view on the occupation of writing as a means to earn living was started with Tan Da (1889-1939), and writers got aware that the works were also goods, which were governed by the market mechanism. During Vietnam’s doi moi, or renovation, the market economy and the global digital communication network, or the internet, have both exerted strong impacts on literature, thus ushering in a new development period of the country’s literature.
