National Heroes of Vietnam through the Lens of State Myth-making

Terskikh M.

摘要

The elevation by the state of certain historical characters to the rank of national heroes is always myth-making, which pursues its own goals. To understand such goals in relation to Vietnam, it seems important to consider its national heroes, especially since their list is actually determined at the state level.

An analysis of the “official” national heroes of Vietnam allows us to draw a number of conclusions. The choice of characters is largely «Sino-centric», which generally reflects the role of the northern neighbor in the history of the Vietnamese state and its worldview in the modern period. Most of the heroes are military leaders and heads of state (mainly who went down in history because the resistance to the Chinese), and not cultural figures, science or art. At the same time, their official biographies are always close to the image of an ideal person, regardless of actual actions. Here one can see the Confucian basis of Vietnamese society, in which history is always positive. Noteworthy is the apparent lack of figures from the last two centuries (with the exception of Ho Chi Minh), which seems to reflect the following peculiarity of the political culture of Vietnam: power usually avoids personification. Also interesting is the modest number of characters associated with Buddhism and religion in general, which may be a consequence of the course taken in the last century to build socialism, which presupposes an atheistic view of the world.

Synthetic Classification of Provinces and Cities in Vietnam as a Guide for Regional Policy

Bondarenko K., Afonina A.

摘要

Vietnam is a country with a relatively high level of regional inequality. The General Statistics Office of Vietnam groups the provinces based on their geographic location. This article presents the classification of the provinces and cities of Vietnam based not only on geography, but also on their socio-economic characteristics, economic structure, and the membership in free economic zones (FEZs). The analysis identifies four groups of provinces and cities: i) highly developed (FEZ members with high GRP per capita and a developed technological industry) ii) developed (FEZ members with high untapped economic growth potential and a highly diversified economic base), iii) moderately developed (with a vast primary sector and high potential for the development of the tourism sector) and iv) less developed (the poorest regions). The article highlights individual provinces, the level of socio-economic development of which (ceteris paribus) will allow them to transfer towards the group of more developed provinces in the near future. In order to reduce inequality in other provinces, we propose to use approaches, which have been successfully implemented in highly developed and developed regions, such as incentives for foreign investors or tax preferences for the development of significant industries in individual provinces.

Iqbal B., Yadav A., Phan Q.

摘要

The relations between India and Vietnam have been strengthening in both social and economic aspects. The bilateral trade and investment relations between the two countries are on an upward trend. In this context, the present paper analyzes the trade intensity between India and Vietnam and provides an overview of the investment relations. The study also examines the impact of the host country's GDP and exchange rate on the home country's export level for both India and Vietnam using the Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network technique of Artificial Neural Network. The main findings of the study show that before 2017, India's exports are more intensive than imports with Vietnam and Vietnam's imports are more intensive than exports with India. However, since 2017, this trend is slightly reversed and Vietnam's exports are more intense than imports with India. Furthermore, it is found that the host country's GDP and exchange rate have a significant impact on India and Vietnam's bilateral exports.

Vietnam Healthcare Expenditure

Vu P., Tran L.

摘要

Household health expenditure is important in shaping human capital for developing countries, including Vietnam. This study aims to examine the factors affecting household health expenditure in Vietnam. The study used a combination of descriptive and multivariate regression analysis based on the Vietnam Household Living Standards Survey (VHLSS) 2016. As a result of the regression analysis, demographic factors such as gender, ethnicity, age, education level, and region are the most important determinants of healthcare spending in Vietnam. This result is similar to other studies conducted in Vietnam and other countries. For developing countries including Vietnam, the determinants of personal health expenditure raise several issues that need to be addressed by health planners. Some policy implications are suggested, including (i) improving the health care system in rural areas, (ii) strengthening the existing social safety net for the elderly, and (iii) developing health insurance covering the entire population.

French-Vietnamese Educational Culture in Cochinchina (1862–1945)

Ngo T., Bui H.

摘要

During the colonization process, the French government issued many policies on all aspects from life to the economy in Vietnam to “domesticate” the Vietnamese people. In the field of education, France was particularly interested in establishing a colonial education system that was completely dependent on France. The process of imposing the educational system on the model of the French educational culture is also the process of absorbing and transforming the Vietnamese-French educational culture in Vietnam in general and in Cochinchina in particular. In this study, we analyze and evaluate the Franco-Vietnamese educational culture in Cochinchina during the French colonial period. From the research results, it is shown that through the process of establishing the French educational culture in Cochinchina (Vietnam), Vietnamese culture has received the French educational culture and created its educational characteristics in the period history of modern Vietnam. This education has many changes compared to the traditional Confucian education. This is the process of receiving and transforming the culture to fit the exogenous and endogenous, transforming the exogenous into the endogenous, becoming its own culture.

Vasilenko V., Cao Thi V.

摘要

For the first time, based on a multidimensional model of Vietnamese culture, the article examines the features of the development of Vietnamese dance art, the process of its professionalization, and the introduction of European classical dance to Vietnamese soil. A layer of authentic Vietnamese culture is taken as a framework, around which the configuration of cultural elements and the style of art are crystallized in different historical and cultural contexts. The classification of types and types of Vietnamese choreographic art is given. The emergence of the national ballet as a new type of performing art for Vietnam is analyzed from the point of view of the contact of authentic Vietnamese culture with Chinese-Confucian and Buddhist, European, Soviet, modern Western cultural traditions. The most significant works of small and large choreographic forms of 1950-2024 are given. The scientific significance of the conclusions lies in the fact that the methodological approach developed by the authors, the factual material introduced into scientific circulation and the formulated conclusions help to clarify the modern picture of the dynamics of Vietnamese culture and art. The article shows the role and importance of modern choreographic art in establishing interstate cooperation. The conclusion is made about the progressive development of Vietnamese choreographic art, and the need to preserve traditional Vietnamese culture is emphasized.
