Theorising Foreign Policy and IR in Vietnam: A Case for a Non-Western IRT?
Toropchin G.V.
Abstract

The article is devoted to revealing some of the key concepts pertaining to International Relations Theories (IRT) suggested by the leading Vietnamese scholars at present. While claiming no comprehensiveness with regard to the coverage, the paper unveils some of the circumstances that served as a background for the evolution of International Relations (IR) as a discipline in Vietnam with a specific focus on the indigenous school(s) of thought. In particular, a Vietnamese conceptualisation of the middle power theory is of interest, being relevant not only in terms of advancing the methodological constructs but also for formulating – even if indirectly – Vietnam’s foreign policy in practice. On the whole, noteworthy is the creative adaptation of Ho Chi Minh’s thoughts to the contemporary intricacies of international politics. Findings show that while some Vietnamese groundwork in IR theories is typical of non-Western scholarship on the whole, it manifests a certain degree of uniqueness in that it relies on a combination of Marxist-Leninist doctrines and Ho Chi Minh’s postulates with both characteristically Asian concepts (e.g. “bamboo diplomacy”) and theoretical developments originating in the Global West (such as the concept of a “middle power”).

Novikova E.S., Nguyen H.P., Le H.A.
Abstract

The significance and possibilities for furthering economic ties between Russia and Vietnam in the light of the current global scenario establish the relevance of this study. The purpose of the research paper is to provide multi-dimensional views on the bilateral trade relationship between Russia and Vietnam in different time periods, as well as to make judgments for the future. The aim of the study is to analyze the context and situation of exports and imports between the two countries. The main methods of the study are to collect and analyze historical data, thereby making analyses and comparisons based on different influencing factors. Both nations should exert more effort to strengthen their cooperation, expand into new areas, improve their infrastructure to speed up transactions, and look for shared solutions to payment issues that could affect the entire import and export process in order to be able to develop further and make the most of the development potential. Additionally, promoting commerce and raising investment capital between firms in both countries depends on the facilitation of tourist and cultural exchange activities between the two nations.

“Golden age” of traditional Vietnamese society. “Сontinuous taxation” in the second half of the 17th–beginning of the 18th century
Fedorin A.L.
Abstract

In the second half of the 17th century in the domains of the ruling Trinh house (formally the Later Le dynasty) in Northern Vietnam, there was a gradual transition from a militaristic system of economic existence to a peacetime governance scheme. The central link in the changes that took place was the introduction of the so-called “permanent taxation”, which boiled down to the state’s refusal to interfere in the affairs of the community, fixing “in perpetuity” the forms and amounts of tax and other obligations of these communities to the state and refusal to regularly review them in connection with possible population growth or an increase in land area. An analysis of the materials from the “Continuation of the Complete Annals of Dai Viet” and other sources covering the events of this period showed that this reform had a beneficial effect on the situation in the country, led to rapid economic growth and contributed to the beginning of a real “golden age” in traditional Vietnamese society.

“Finding peace in God” – faith practices of provincial catholic students in Hanoi
Vu T.H., Vo T.P., Vu P.N., Vu T.T.
Abstract

Hanoi is one of the major educational centers of Vietnam. Every year, about 500,000 – 600,000 students come to Hanoi to study at colleges and universities, including provincial Catholic students. They mostly come from the northern provinces of Vietnam where Catholics live in tightly-organized, one could almost say closed, communities organized around the daily practice of their faith. For each individual, the way they express and practice their faith in the city shows that they are searching for the practical meaning that religion brings to their lives in this very different environment. Based on anthropological research and sociological surveys with a target group of provincial Catholic students in Hanoi, this study describes how they construct emergent religious identities in order to cope with unprecedented challenges to their understandings of morality and Catholic personhood. This article focuses on understanding the shift in faith practice of provincial Catholic students in Hanoi, the debates within the student community around the core issues of faith and sin, the general tolerance for behaviors -their own and others- that would not be possible in village life. Above all, it describes, how they reach God in ways compatible with these challenging new experiences.

The Montagnard village: unique heritage of the Vietnamese Central Highlands
Dang H.G.
Abstract

The Vietnamese Central Highlands is a unique land in the ecological and cultural context of Vietnam. Among the factors making the area distinctive is the traditional type of village known locally as a Montagnard village. A Montagnard village is not only a functioning residence, but also a social-cultural unit that contributes to determining the world outlook, the way of life, the kinds of art, and the diverse norms of behavior of the indigenous residents. This article seeks to analyze the typical traits which serve to differentiate the Montagnard village from the villages of Kinh and other ethnic minority groups.

Starikova E.O.
Abstract

The article is devoted to the songs of the Jing people. The research is based on the textual recordings of the songs. The Jing people, one of the 55 officially recognized ethnic minorities of the PRC, are ethnic Vietnamese who have lived in China in the territories bordering Vietnam since the beginning of the 16th century. Folk song singing is one of the important ethnic markers of Jing culture. These songs have much in common with the folk songs of the Viet people living in Vietnam, both in form and content. The article examines what features are typical for the Jing songs, what images and themes are common in these songs, how Jing people preserve the Vietnamese tradition, but at the same time construct their own.

History of Vietnam “in english”
Tsvetov P.Y.
Abstract

The review examines the book “A Brief History of Vietnam” by Bill Hayton, a famous British researcher of the problems of Southeast and East Asia. Despite the brevity of the presentation, the author presented quite fully the historical path of the Vietnamese nation from the period of ethnogenesis to the present day. The author's position, which distinguishes him from many Western colleagues, is that he strives to show the history of the Vietnamese nation not as a continuous history of wars with its northern neighbor. It is characteristic that most of the author’s provisions coincide with the point of view of Russian scientists.
